Strategies for tone identification in observers with absolute pitch

چکیده

Behavioral studies have shown that observers with absolute pitch tend to perform very proficiently in a range of tone identification tasks. However, most studies focus only on response accuracy, leaving the question whether the strategies used by these observers are absolute (i.e., not based on a comparison with an internal or external reference point different from the judged note) or relative (based on estimates of intervals between notes and internal or external reference points). To gain further insight into the nature of tone identification by individuals with absolute pitch, we collected response time data from three participants in a standard two-octave tone identification task. The data showed reliable differences in response time between notes within individuals. We discuss the implications of these differences, and provide an account of judgment by observers with absolute pitch in terms of a relative strategy based on multiple internal references.

Perception of musical and lexical tones by Taiwanese-speaking musicians.

This study explored the relationship between music and speech by examining absolute pitch and lexical tone perception. Taiwanese-speaking musicians were asked to identify musical tones without a reference pitch and multispeaker Taiwanese level tones without acoustic cues typically present for speaker normalization. The results showed that a high percentage of the participants (65% with an exact...

Cross-octave masking of single tones and musical sequences: The effects of structure on auditory recognition

A series of experiments explored the role of structural information in the auditory recognition process, within the context of a backward recognition masking paradigm. A masking tone presented after a tl!st tone has been found to interfere with the perceptual processing of the test tone, the degree of interference decreasing with increased durations of the silent intertone interval between the ...

Musical pitch identification by absolute pitch possessors.

Musical pitch identification was investigated in two experiments in which absolute pitch (AP) possessors and nonpossessors categorized tones presented in isolation into predetermined pitch classes. Stimuli consisted of 60 different tones per octave (at intervals of 20 cents). The experiments were designed to minimize the possibility that subjects could use strategies other than AP in perfi~rmin...

Perception of musical pitch and lexical tones by Mandarin-speaking musicians.

The relationship between music and language processing was explored in two perception experiments on the identification of musical notes and Mandarin tones. In the music task, Mandarin-speaking musicians were asked to identify musical notes of three timbres without a reference pitch. 72% of the musicians met the criterion for absolute pitch when an exact match was required, and 82% met the crit...

Absolute Identification is Surprisingly Faster with More Closely Spaced Stimuli

Bow and set size effects on response times in absolute identification mirror the effects on accuracy: Central stimuli and stimuli in large sets are responded to more slowly and less accurately. In an analysis of the response time data from Experiment 1 of N. Stewart, G. D. A. Brown and N. Chater (2005), involving the absolute identification of tone frequency (pitch), we find that in contrast to...
